Tips For Designing A Water Feature For Your Garden

Water features are a great way to transform an ordinary backyard into a relaxing place to get away. The sound of running water can help to drown out the noise of the city or neighbors. The water can also attract beneficial wildlife, including butterflies, frogs and birds. To create attractive water features consider the following pointers.
The size of a water garden will depend on two primary factors: the size of the property and the time one is willing to invest in maintaining a water feature. Objects should be in scale with the remainder of one's yard. Larger features often require an additional investment of one's time.
If the backyard is extremely small or the owner desires a water feature that requires little maintenance, a wall hung fountain or tabletop container may be a great choice. In a larger area, a stand alone fountain or small in-ground water garden may be ideal. If the property has a large yard, it may be perfect for the full sized, in-ground water garden.
The water garden should also match the architectural design of the home and design of the garden. Formal architecture and gardens with straight paths can benefit from geometric shaped classic fountains. Rustic homes work well with wooden tubs, curved pools and whimsical fountains. For the contemporary home consider a large rock or boulder that features natural indentations to collect water.
Larger pools are ideal focal points for the entire garden. The furnishings can be arranged around the feature. If the area has already been designed, the wall fountain or tabletop garden can simply be added as an accessory to help provide an ambiance that is more relaxed.
The best place to locate the water garden is the area of the yard where you spend the most time when outdoors, and not in a back corner. If adding a fountain, consider placing the garden near the home so the relaxing sound of moving water can be heard indoors as well. Be sure electrical power is available. An electrician can advise the owner if the outlet offers GFI protection needed for the water feature.
To make the water garden even more beautiful, add accessories and plants to help it look more natural. Add containers of plants near stand alone or wall mounted fountains. Consider adding a pond fogger to provide a light fog in the area that provides a mysterious look and feel for the garden.
