Starting a business is an immensely exciting thing to do. It's undeniably stressful and might drive you to the edge with worry, but the first step is to create an effective workplace. You might think you can run your business out of your bedroom - but the reality is that as you get bigger you will have to consider more effective space to get things done.
The first thing to do is find a place. You will most likely be renting unless you've got yourself some serious investment, so look at your budget and then peruse the local listings for the area you want to be. It's possible you'll run into some problems given your location and budget. If you've got a small budget and you're looking in Knightsbridge you might want to consider Kingston instead - be realistic at this stage.
Furnishings are very important in an office, especially as you grow and get more employees. You might be comfortable sitting on the floor but they will not, and you can't expect them to be anyway. There are many different considerations when it comes to chairs. A lot of people like the fancy kind of ergonomic designer chairs, they're pretty but they're really not that necessary. Just get some standard office chairs. Also think about desks, these don't have to be fancy at all - just functional.
You will also have to think about getting IT equipment. If you don't have IT equipment with things like web access then you will pretty much be unable to do any business whatsoever. Have a look at some low-end computers, depending on what you need. Of course if you're doing design work then you will need to have more powerful ones.
Also think about your phone system, depending on the nature of your business then you will have to get a phone system installed and maintained. It's possible that IT is not your speciality, and just a tool by which you do business, so have a look into some kind of IT services to help you out if things go wrong - or also to consult with initially if you're not quite sure of what you need.
The work space needs to be filled with healthy happy workers, as they do the best work. You should definitely provide things like tea and coffee facilities. Water is absolutely essential too - in fact it's illegal not to provide drinking water to your workers. If you're planning on doing presentations or some group brainstorming then you might need a large screen or a whiteboard to make sure you can do what you want to do.
Always assess your needs before buying, that miniature pool table might look like a lot of fun but it's really not essential to getting your work done is it? Overall, just make sure your head's in business mode and not swayed by beautiful chairs or lovely water features. They might look nice but they're just not necessary. And anyway, you wouldn't want all of those distractions stopping you from working would you!
